Strategy development is indispensable to know where a business is going. When developing a strategy it's very important to have an in-depth understanding of the issues facing the business and to lead the team to define options and solutions. Several methodologies are useful when creating a strategy:

  • LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®is is a facilitated meeting, communication and problem-solving process in which participants are led through a series of questions, probing deeper and deeper into the subject. Its an excellent tool for teams to thoroughly engage in the session at hand and can be used to embed more traditional tools like SWOT or Porters 5 forces.

SWOT analysis is a great tool to understand your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face.

Porters 5 forces is a traditional tool that helps you evaluate the profitability of a new idea.

  • Hoshin Matrix planning process aligns your strategic objectives with the specific resources and action plans needed to make them happen

What is Lean-Six Sigma?

In a nutshell, it is a combined approach of two methodologies that help businesses become more efficient at what they do.

Lean

  • The modern use of Lean was born in Japan at Toyota

  • Is a business philosophy

  • Looks at reducing any unnecessary step in the manufacturing of a product that does not in some way contribute to the profitability of that product

Six Sigma
  • Was born in USA at Motorola, though it was made famous by GE.

  • Examines all business processes to eliminate variation and redundancy that could contribute to errors in finished product

  • Uses measurable results to guide adjustments to processes

  • The methodology is sumarized in DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control)

  • More encompassing; projects generally take a longer time commitment

These two approaches work hand-in-hand across a wide variety of business settings.

How is it done?

The idea is to identify those activities that don't add value to the bottomline ("waste") while at the same time increasing focus in those processes that have an effect on profit and workflow.

How can this methodology help my business?

It is a very structured approach and changes are measured. Business leaders across the industry find the training useful for addressing many sorts of problems. Lean six sigma is know for being hard on processes but soft on people.

People are individuals, with different needs and interests, these methodologies help them to have their voice heard.

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Methodology guides people through a free and honest exchange of opinion. The physical and tangible construction allows them to have conversations which flow without the fear of treading on personal feelings. The real issues are addressed, and ultimately people are able to see things through the eyes of their colleagues – and have them view the picture through their own.

Lean six sigma tools help people learn to be the best they can be. It helps them to understand the processes they are working with and how  to improve them. When there is true leadership support for a Lean Six Sigma Implementation people become engaged. People are the not so hidden drivers of quality.
